Open house at Wagner pool

Wagner Memorial Pool in Twisp will host an open house on Friday (June 12) from 4 – 6 p.m. on the eve of its seasonal opening Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

Visitors can learn about the pool’s operations, necessary upgrades, how to participate in a fundraising drive to support the upgrades, and how to sign up for swim lessons or buy season passes. Light refreshments will be served.

Kids fish for free at hatchery

Saturday (June 13) is Kids’ Free Fishing Day at the Winthrop National Fish Hatchery from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. The event includes a host of learning activities. Kids up to 13 can head to the pond with a fishing pole to try their luck at catching a rainbow trout. Prizes will be awarded for tagged fish. For more information, call 996-2424.

Watercross racers at Lake Osoyoos

About 50 watercross race teams from the United States and Canada are expected to fill Deep Bay Park in Oroville this weekend for the second Lake Osoyoos Cup.

Watercross racing is like motocross on water, with high-speed straight-aways and hairpin turns. Registration opens at 7 a.m. Saturday (June 13) in the park, with racing expected to begin about 11 a.m. and run until 4 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. The event is free for spectators. This is the first of two personal watercraft races in North-Central Washington this year. The next race will take place July 18 and 19 during the Apple Pie Jamboree in Pateros.

Killer Whales in the water

The Methow Valley Killer Whales swim team began training with “boot camp” sessions this week at Wagner Memorial Pool in Twisp. Regular practice begins on Monday (June 15). Time trials are scheduled for June 19, and the first meet is in Okanogan on June 25. For more information, visit www.killerwhales.org.
