Free fishing for kids at Winthrop hatchery
Saturday (June 14) is free fishing day for kids ages 12 and under at the Winthrop National Fish Hatchery from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Activities include fishing for big trout, a fish-cleaning station, concessions, hands-on casting with targets, an appearance by Smokey Bear, salmon cooking, fly tying, gyotaku, fish art, ethics and boating safety.
T-shirts commemorating the event will feature a winning design created for free fishing day by Methow Valley Elementary School fifth-grader Phoenix Doran. The block prints were created through an interdisciplinary unit on Methow fish and fish habitat offered to fifth graders in conjunction with National Fishing and Boating Week and with sponsorship from the Methow Valley Ranger District, with the assistance of local artists Laura Gunnip and Emily Post.
