Mack Lloyd Park in Winthrop provided ample room to practice casting at the “Youth Fly Fishing Camp” in August.
A first-ever “Youth Fly Fishing Camp,” sponsored by the Methow Valley Fly Fishers (MVFF), was held in Winthrop Aug. 5-7 at Mack Lloyd Park in Winthrop.
Nine kids — eight boys and one girl — aged 12 to 16 and from as far away as Pateros spent three days in Winthrop under the tutelage of three club members getting hands-on instruction in casting, fly selection, gear setup, entomology, knots, and basic etiquette.
Each participant received their own rod, reel, line and tackle using funds received by MVFF during Give Methow in 2025.
Topics covered also included local fish identification and conservation efforts, building the next generation of stewards for our waters and fisheries. The camp ended with a real-live casting and catching day at the pond at the Winthrop National Fish Hatchery.
MVFF hopes to run the camp every year and will be asking for donations during Give Methow next month to offset costs for youth participants.
