When you think of cello music, what comes to mind? Bach and Beethoven? How about Stevie Wonder?
A genre-defying cello ensemble, Portland Cello Project, pays tribute to Stevie Wonder in a show on Saturday (Sept. 5) at The Merc Playhouse in Twisp. The event is presented by Methow Arts and the Methow Valley Chamber Music Festival.
Portland Cello Project, based in Portland, Oregon, is known for reimagining everything from Bach to Beyonce. The group has built a reputation for pushing the boundaries of classical instrumentation by bringing cello music to rock clubs, concert halls and festivals across the country.
Stevie Wonder is widely regarded as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. Portland Cello Project’s Stevie Wonder Tribute offers hits from his prolific song catalog from the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s.
With a full band and featuring vocalist Saeeda Wright, the experience includes a setlist of groovy, cello-forward arrangements of Wonder’s music.
The Portland Cello Project collaborates with a range of artists to perform bold arrangements of music including hip-hop, metal, and indie rock, all through the lens of classical technique and adventurous orchestration.
The show was initially scheduled to be held outdoors at the Pipestone Canyon Ranch. Due to persistent wildfire smoke, the performance was moved indoors at The Merc. Because of limited seating, it’s recommended to purchase tickets in advance.
Seating and bar open at 5 p.m., beer and wine will be available for purchase. The show begins at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $40 for adults 18 and over, $10 for youths 10-17. For information, visit www.methowarts.org/our-events.
