Nancy Jane Merwin passed away at home with her family on Sept 14, 2023. She was 91 years old. She grew up on a farm in rural Ohio, surrounded by her horses, dogs, sheep, the occasional cow, and a large loving family. From a high school graduating class of 18, she went on to study government and politics at Radcliffe where she met her lifelong love, Charles, who was studying to become a doctor at Harvard. Nancy and Charles traveled throughout the U.S., creating warm and welcoming homes for their growing brood and countless pets along the way, as they tackled med school, residency, and 16 years in the U.S Air Force, including a long year apart while Charles served in Vietnam.
After retiring from the military, they settled in New Mexico where they spent the next 52 years as happy civilians, sharing hikes in the mountains, picnics on the mesa, rock-hunting in the desert, and a deep love of all kinds of music with their lively herd. Nancy was the rock, the glue, the driving instructor, the chauffeur, the chef, the task master, all the while creating the deep, eternal roots connecting our family in all its beautiful essence.
Nancy bravely relocated to Winthrop in 2020. She loved this valley, the nature and wildlife that surround us here, the breathtaking views, the long walks, lunches at La Fonda, and the friends who instantly became family. Amazing mom of eight, gramma of 24, great-gramma of 25 (so far), we salute you, thank you for all you have given us, and will hold you in our hearts forever.
