For the second consecutive year the team captained by Robby Sigler took the top spot at the 20th Cove Classic golf tournament held at Windhaven near Winthrop on Saturday (July 15).
Sigler’s four-person scramble team carded a tournament record-tying 5 under par 25 on the executive-style golf course. Joining Sigler again on the winning team were Silas Shaw, Andrew Carr and Riley Dickinson.
The second-place team at 26 was captained by Heather Patrick. Tristan Schmekel earned Closest to the Pin honors on hole No. 5, landing his tee shot inside 5 feet from the flag stick. Derek Desjardins and Deb Hardy took the long drive honors on hole No. 7.
The Cove Classic is an annual fundraiser to support The Cove’s programs in Twisp, including Friday Food at the Methow Valley School District, the Aid and Assistance Fund, the Manager Mall and Neighbors Helping Neighbors, and its flagship program, the Methow Valley Food Bank.
Nineteen teams took part in the four-person scramble on the nine-hole course, raising through entry fees, sponsorships and donations about $12,000 for the local food bank. Since the first Classic in 2003, the annual event has run every year except 2015 when smoked out by the Okanogan Complex of fires. In 2014, the Classic was played just 48 hours ahead of the lightning bolts that touched off the Carlton Complex Fire.
“Another great event, lots of fun and fellowship doing good work in the community,” said Cove Executive Director Glenn Schmekel. “We’re very thankful for the support of the golfing community, and local sponsors who make this event an annual success.”
