Liberty Bell announces senior athlete awards

June 15, 2023 by Methow Valley News

Liberty Bell High School announced its Senior Athlete Awards at their annual school awards assembly on June 5 in the high school gym.

Receiving Senior Scholar Athlete Awards were Sawyer Crandall, Ruby McCarthy, Tristan Schmekel, Jackson Schmekel, Riley Lidey, Ellie Blank, and Nicholas White. Participating in at least two sports and maintaining a 3.5 grade point average (GPA) are the requirements of earning the award.

Crandall was a three-sport athlete, playing football, basketball and baseball this year. The Schmekel twins ran cross country and played soccer. Lidey was also a three-sporter, playing football, basketball and was a member of the Mountain Lion Track and Field team. White played football and baseball. McCarthy was the girls’ soccer goalkeeper and the lone senior on the youthful basketball squad this year. Blank played volleyball and tennis this year, battling through knee issues after sitting out her junior year.

The Claude Watkins Award, named for a former Methow Valley News publisher/owner, went to Nicholas White. The Watkins goes to the scholar athlete (3.5 GPA minimum) who displays excellent citizenship in the school and community, participates in at least two sports and is voted on by the staff and faculty of the high school.

Lidey and McCarthy were also named Liberty Bell Senior Athletes of the Year.
