Community Briefs: Wildfire preparedness, Home electrification presentation

Wildfire preparedness

Methow At Home hosts a free online program on “Wildfire Preparedness at Home,” on Thursday (May 25) from 9-10 a.m. Eli Loftis of the Okanogan Conservation District will discuss the district’s risk assessment service and how to gauge your own property to know if you are a good candidate for an assessment and possible cost-sharing opportunities. Home electrification presentation

Resilient Methow, a program of Methow Valley Citizens Council, will host a presentation titled “Home Electrification Forum: Take Climate Action and Take Advantage of Incentives” on Thursday (May 25) from 5-6:30 p.m. at the Winthrop Library.

The event will feature presentations about the benefits of electrification and available resources from Rewiring America, the Okanogan County Electric Co-Op, the Okanogan County Public Utility District, the Washington State Energy Office, a health expert, and a local contractor. A panel discussion and question and answer period will follow. There will be an option for remote participation. For more information, visit www.resilientmethow.org.

Building science group

The Methow Valley Building Science group’s meeting that was scheduled for Thursday (May 25); has been postponed; an alternate date will be announced shortly. The group is a discussion forum for builders and architects/designers interested in energy efficiency and sustainability. For information, email margo@pbwarchitects.com

Twisp library book sale

The Twisp library will host a Memorial Day weekend book sale at the Methow Valley Community Center on Friday (May 26) from 4-7 p.m., and Saturday (May 27) from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Purchases by donation. No electronic scanners; book resellers are welcome Saturday at 11 a.m., no earlier. All proceeds will benefit the library and community center. For information, call (509 449-2594.

School retirees meet

The Okanogan County School Retirees’ Association will hold a general meeting at 10 a.m. on Friday (May 26) at Community Presbyterian Church of Omak, 9 Birch St. S, Omak. For more information, call (509) 422-3532.

Mazama Pancake Breakfast

The Mazama Community Club’s popular World Famous Pancake Breakfast returns on Saturday (May 27) from 8-11:30 at the club’s red building on Goat Creek Road. Cost is $10; children 6 and younger eat free. In addition to breakfast, there will a 1-kilometer kids’ run and a 5K fun run starting a 9 a.m.; information tables for several community organizations; an Okanogan County Fire District 6 fire truck on display; and pickleball games on the nearby court. Renaming ceremony for Hwy 20

The public is invited to attend a re-naming ceremony on Saturday (May 27) at 1 p.m. in the Tonasket Legacy Park. Highway 20 in Okanogan County will become the “Vietnam War Veterans Memorial Highway.”

The Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation Honor Guard will present the colors, the Tribal Singers “The Citizens” will sing the Honor song. Louie Wilson will be the master. Local elected officials have been invited. Roy Jennings, chairman of the Washington State Transportation Commission, will be the keynote speaker.

Family Constellations

Facilitator Tania Gonzalez Ortega offers a free demonstration of how Family Constellations work to bring healing and wholeness within an individual on Saturday (May 27) at the Methow Valley Wellness Center, 105 Norfolk Road, Winthrop, from 3-5 p.m. By donation. Memorial service

Brewster’s American Legion Columbia Post 97 will conduct a memorial service for Marvin E. Galbraith and John Timothy Lane, Brewster natives who died serving in the Viet Nam War, on Saturday (May 27) at 9 a.m. at the Locust Grove Cemetery in Brewster. Afterward, a reception with coffee and pastries will be held at the Legion Hall. For information, email Gregwagg@yahoo.com

Memorial Day ceremony

The American Legion Auxiliary, American Legion and Sullivan Cemetery Association will host a Memorial Day ceremony at the Sullivan Cemetery in Winthrop on Monday (May 29) at 11 a.m. Refreshments will be available.
