Twisp Public Works Director Andrew Denham described it as a fourth-quarter, time-expired, “Hail Mary” pass to the end zone. The football analogy seems appropriate as the town managed to find and hire a highly qualified manager for the Wagner Memorial Pool at the last second before the summer season was canceled.
Denham said on Tuesday (April 18) that Thor Tyson, who has extensive experience coaching kids in aquatic sports, is already at work this week as the pool’s manager in anticipation of opening to the public in early June. Tyson recently moved to Winthrop, Denham said.
The town had said earlier that the pool’s opening would depend on being able to hire a manager by April 13. Earlier efforts by the town and Friends of the Pool to have the nonprofit operate the pool this summer ran up against logistical hurdles and time constraints.
Denham said Friends of the Pool will help with volunteer and staff recruitment while the pool is being commissioned for use, an annual exercise that usually takes several weeks.
The town will begin advertising for lifeguard and other staff positions soon, Denham said.
