
The Methow Valley Youth Biathlon Team at Telemark, B.C.
The Methow Valley’s Youth Biathlon Team recently traveled across the border for the first time in several years to compete in a multi-age meet in Telemark, British Columbia.
Fourteen young competitors made the trip, accompanied by coaches Betsy Devin-Smith and Scott Waichler and several parents.
In the novice boys/girls, 8-10 years old, Lena DeCuir took 1st place honors and Liam Gutzler placed 3rd. Cerro Jenkins took 4th place, followed by Nils Smith in 5th, Neva Clark 9th and Colin Eschbach 10th.
In the U13 division, Torsen Yahares won 1st place for the boys and Sisu Clark placed 2nd in the U13 girls’ race. Both the novice and U13 races were 2.5 kilometers.
The 6K junior girls competition found locals Wylie Smith in 4th, Sammy DeSalvo 5th and Ava Burrington placed 8th. Soren DeCuir and River Ferguson placed 4th and 5th, respectively, in the boys junior division.
Assistant Coach Scott Waichler placed 2nd in the men’s 9K masters division and Methow Valley Biathlete and program alumnus Alex Tareski placed 3rd. Tareski was taking a short break from his engineering studies at Montana State University to join the team in B.C.
