A New Year Poem
Starting the year with COVID fear
Giving way to summer skies, smokeless and clear.
What a blessing it was to breath deep and long
Until September and October came along.
Soccer and running canceled once more
To avoid itchy eyes and throats coarse and sore.
It’s easy to forget the trials we’ve faced
Once we’re back at the rink with our skates tight and laced.
Springtime was cool and we all wondered when
Summer would come, then questioned if it would ever end.
With an arctic dome so fierce and white
The snow thwarted the trees whose leaves held on tight.
Powdery fluff covered the year’s end
As storms slowed the packages we needed to send.
The wintery blanket hides many a tear
Of the sorrows and pains of the heart this past year.
But under the snow lies secrets to life
Find time to chill out, rest, and avoid trivial strife.
The New Year is nothing more than a celestial event,
Intentions to imagine and or regrets to lament.
Reach out to the friend whom you seldom saw
And relish the beauty that amazes and strikes awe.
Today is a day like none other before,
The bounty of Earth sleeps a few weeks more.
The snow will recede as the sun plays its tricks
But not before more turns on the slopes and swishes of sticks.
So, relish the cold and embrace this harsh chill
For soon sunscreen and flip flops our beach bags will fill.
