In a spin-off of the more familiar form of biathlon that involves snow, skis and sharpshooting, Methow Valley Biathlon recently held a more summery version of the sport, using legs to run and bikes to ride in place of skis.
The weather was also polar opposite, with temperatures in low 80s under clear blue skies.
It was a small field with five junior and five master participants taking part in the Oct. 2 competition on the Sean McCabe trails complex at Liberty Bell High School. The distances for running between shooting ranges varied by age, the level 1 youth running 3.3 kilometers, level 2 youth going 5K, and the masters running 6K overall.
The distances for the biking phase were 7.5K for all youth classes, 11K for the masters 3 level, and 9K for the oldest master level 4.
