The 2,000 ducks that bobbed their way down the Chewuch and Methow rivers, some requiring extrication after getting caught up on rocks or branches, raised $20,000 for Winthrop Kiwanis’ fund to benefit local youths and community projects. In addition, Kiwanis raised an estimated $3,000 for the fund at their Duck Days family fun day over Labor Day weekend.
The larger ducks, backed by businesses, made the best time from the Chewuch Bridge to the Methow Bridge, with the duck sponsored by Xtreme Power Sports of Okanogan gliding the course in a little over 12 minutes. The smaller ducks were still being scooped out of the river by a dedicated group of volunteers half an hour after they started their journey.
Sandra Jensen’s duck was first, winning her $500. Don Haley’s was second, for a $300 prize. Hugh Loucks’ was third, for $100. Wayne Bonn and Linda Jensen won fourth and fifth place for $50 each. The corporate winner receives advertising and publicity opportunities, but not a cash prize.
