Kimberly Rae Smith – Raymond Edward Smith

July 6, 2022 by Methow Valley News

Kimberly Rae Smith
Raymond Edward Smith

On Monday June 20, 2022, my mother Kim and brother Ray were shot and killed in their home. My grandmother Judy who also shared the house is with our family and surrounded with love and support. My mom, grandmother and brother had dedicated the last year to turning a barn into a home and creating a life in the Aeneas valley. They will never finish building that home and life. We need your help to make sure that my grandmother feels safe and is financially able to start over after having the sanctity and peace of her new home destroyed.

Donations can be made through the link below to our Help for Judy fund at STCU to cover legal fees, caring for their beloved pets and caring for my Grandma Judy’s needs. We ask for privacy for our family and loved ones at this very difficult time. We appreciate the outpouring of love, support and offers of help from our community. It means more to us than we can ever fully express.

To direct deposit to the STCU account use account # 2003869456 and call the business Help for Judy. Venmo connected to the STCU account is @Help-for-Judy and the name associated with it is Becky Smith, my stepmom who is helping. Checks should be made out to “Help for Judy” and be sent to P.O. Box 260, Okanogan, WA 98840.

Kimberly Rae Smith, 56, was shot and killed in her home near Tonasket June 20, 2022.

Kim was born July 10, 1965, in Longview, Washington. She grew up and attended school in nearby Toutle, and lived on the edge of town where she ran wild in the forest with her twin brothers, cousins and friends.

Kim loved animals and nature and was an artist from an early age. She got her first horse, a very sick rescue, as a teen, starting a lifelong love affair with all things equine. Not long after that she moved to Okanogan County and starting working on a ranch riding horses no one else had the patience or grit to handle. She became a licensed cosmetologist and while she only worked as a hair dresser for a short time she gave countless free haircuts during her life.

She married David Smith in 1989 and they had two children, Emily and Ray, before they divorced. She was a devoted mother who taught her children to be curious about other cultures, love the natural world, animals, food, art and literature. She worked very hard to support her kids and enjoyed her limited time off creating art, being in nature, being with her animals, family and church community.

She leaves behind her daughter, Emily Swezey, of Okanogan; mother, Judith Almquist, of Tonasket; father Edward Palmer of Toutle; brothers Kelly Palmer of Toutle and Kent Palmer of Castle Rock; and a large heartbroken family and community.

Raymond Edward Smith, 26, was shot and killed in his home near Tonasket on June 20, 2022. Ray was born Dec. 13, 1995, in Omak, Washington. He graduated from Pateros High School in 2014 after a lot of hard work and struggle making his family very proud.

As a child he was fascinated with airplanes and battleships and would take apart anything he could get his hands on. He learned to BBQ as a child and loved cooking meat for his family. He spent many days out hunting, fishing, foraging and cutting firewood. He also loved computer games and a good movie marathon. Ray loved his mom and grandmother and did everything he could for them. He will be remembered as a protector and provider by his family.

Ray leaves behind his father David Smith of Selah; his sister, Emily Swezey, of Okanogan; grandmother, Judith Almquist, of Tonasket; grandfather Edward Palmer, of Toutle; grandmother, Joyce Smith, of Ephrata; grandfather David Smith, of Monse; and a large heartbroken family and community.

A memorial service was held July 2, 2022, at the General Assembly and Church of The First Born, 88 Port Road, Brewster, Washington. In lieu of flowers, donations are greatly appreciated.
