Cove Classic on July 16
The Cove Classic Golf Tournament is set for Saturday, July 16, at Windhaven, the privately owned golf course on West Chewuch Road north of Winthrop. The tournament, an annual fundraiser for The Cove’s Food Bank, Aid and Assistance and Friday Food programs, has happened every year since 2003, except for 2015 when the outbreak of the Carlton Complex Fire canceled the event.
The Cove Classic is a four-person scramble format with room for 15 teams, and will feature a new, shotgun start this year, scheduled for 10 a.m. A barbeque lunch, commemorative shirt and monogrammed golf ball are included with the entry fee. Registration is open, and forms can be picked up at The Cove in Twisp, across from the Twisp post office, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Thursday (June 30) and July 7, or by emailing The Cove at thecovecares@gmail.com.
Entries are due in by 9 a.m. Tuesday, July 12. Cost is $100 for individuals; $300 for a full four-person team.
Zerbe wins at regional meet
Winthrop resident Richard Zerbe placed first in two races in the USA Track & Field Pacific Northwest regional championship in Seattle on June 18. Zerbe took top honors in both the 100- and 200-meter races for the 80 to 84 age group, running the course in 20 seconds for the 100 and 46 seconds for the 200.
At 83, Zerbe was the oldest competitor in each race. He had considered competing in a third race but decided not to, since he was still getting back on his feet after a seven-day hiking trip that left him dehydrated, he said.
Zerbe has been running and racing since his 40s and has won both track and ski races. He stops by the school campus to get pointers from Erik Brooks, who coaches cross-country there.
