A small but determined group rallied to defend reproductive rights and access to abortion care at the Okanogan County courthouse during last Friday’s (May 6) lunch hour.
The group was galvanized to show their support for the right for people to make their own decisions about whether and when to have a child by a Supreme Court draft opinion that was leaked last week. The opinion indicated the court could overturn Roe v. Wade, which has guaranteed the right to an abortion for almost 50 years. It said the right isn’t guaranteed by the Constitution and that the authority to regulate abortion belongs to the states.
“I’m here because nobody has the right to tell somebody else what to do with their body — ever,” said one of the demonstrators. Another read a statement with sobering statistics about the impact of unwanted pregnancies on everything from homelessness to poverty to access to education.
The group said they support everyone’s right to privacy in making decisions about their families, relationships and education.
