
Award-winning author and journalist Tim Egan will be a featured speaker at the June 11 grand opening of the new Winthrop public library.
Renowned Northwest author Tim Egan, whose best-selling works include “The Big Burn,” will speak at the grand opening of the new Winthrop public library on June 11, starting at 6 p.m.

Egan’s presentation will be “The Fire That Saved our Public Lands — And Left us a Warning.” The foundation of the talk will draw upon “The Big Burn,” the story of the nation’s biggest wildfire.
Egan is an award-winning author of nine books and has been a lifelong journalist. His other books include “A Pilgrimage to Eternity,” “The Immortal Irishman,” Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher” and “The Worst Hard Time.” As a journalist, Egan worked as a national correspondent and opinion columnist for the New York Times. He shared a Pulitzer Prize in 2001 with a team of reporters for its series, “How Race is Lived in America.”
The June 11 grand opening events start at 10:30 a.m. and will include an opening ceremony, activities for children and families, a quilt show and auction, a barbeque lunch and much more. NCW Libraries staff and volunteers will welcome everyone inside to explore. The library also anticipates offering a full week of special events for all ages before beginning their regular programming schedule.
FOWL’s book and bake sale on June 18 at the new library, from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., will wrap up the week. Books for kids and teens can be donated for the sale if they are in excellent condition. Drop off donations no later than May 20 at the current library in Winthrop, which will close May 21 for the transition to the new facility.
During the closure, Winthrop Library users can access holds at the Twisp library. Winthrop library users can place new holds to either the Twisp library or the mail order library. Library materials can be returned to the Twisp library at any time.
