Community briefs: Tax prep, virtual town hall, scholarship

February 16, 2022 by Methow Valley News

Free tax prep help

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is taking appointments for its free tax preparation and e-filing services in Okanogan County. Because of COVID precautions, traditional face-to-face preparation with a Tax-Aide counselor is being replaced with a low-contact approach.

Appointments for taxpayers living in Okanogan County can be requested by calling (508) 603-9614 and leaving a voicemail. Appointments can be made for either Omak or Tonasket sites. Assistance may also be requested through the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide website www.aarpfoundation.org/taxaide. The service will be offered through April 15. Tax-Aide is an all-volunteer organization whose tax counselors are trained and certified by the IRS.

Reps. Steele, Goehner schedule virtual town hall

Rep. Mike Steele and Rep. Keith Goehner of Washington’s 12th Legislative District have scheduled a virtual town hall meeting for 2 p.m. Saturday, (Feb. 19).

Pre-registration is required for the event, which will be held over Zoom. The legislators plan to give an update at the halfway-mark of this year’s 60-day legislative session, answer questions and discuss policy being debated in Olympia.

To register, go to https://leg-wa-gov.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_swl2aJwaQf2YFceSgjuzWw.

Scholarship available

The Okanogan County School Retirees’ Association is offering a $1,500 college scholarship for an Okanogan County high school graduate who is at least a junior in college and working toward an initial education certification. The applicant must plan to work in public schools.

The deadline for applications is May 1. Applications are available at https://okanogancsra.com. For more information, contact Riga Figlenski at ritafig2@gmail.com.
