A small contingent of Methow Valley Nordic team skiers traveled to Silver Star, B.C., on Dec. 4-5 to compete in FIS Western Canada Cup. The racing featured over 350 athletes from nearly every province in Canada as well as several U.S. teams.

Aidan Sands (age 13) of Mazama was the only Methow athlete racing Saturday in the U16 5-kilometer mass start skate race. He started in the second-to-last row of the 62-athlete field, but passed more than 40 competitors in the two 2.5K laps to finish in 11th place.

The Sunday race was a 5K classic interval that featured brothers Carter and Graham Sheley (age 17) of Winthrop competing in the U18 men’s category, Carter finished 11th with Graham not far behind in 17th in the field of 32, where first place and 17th place were separated by less than 40 seconds.

In the U16 males 5K classic interval start, Aidan sands finished in 19th place in a field of 50 skiers.

The Nordic team will be traveling to West Yellowstone, Montana, for racing in the Intermountain Division later this month before the holidays.
