Community briefs: Highlands, open house, Christmas services

December 15, 2021 by Methow Valley News

Okanogan Highlands program

Okanogan Highlands offers “Okanogan Ice Islands: Nunataks,” a free program by George Thornton, on Jan. 7, 2022, exploring the high, craggy peaks rising to the west of the Okanogan that are home to unique plant communities.

Thornton, a high school teacher, botanist and lifelong nature enthusiast, will discuss various theories about local natural history and ecology using Chopaka Mountain as a primary example of several nearby Cascade peaks. Thornton taught for 33 years, worked summers doing vegetation surveys for the U.S. Forest Service, and has hiked and explored most of the north Okanogan area.

The event begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Tonasket Community Cultural Center, 411 S. Western Ave. For information, visit www.okanoganhighlands.org.

Open House at Mtn. Annex

Mtn. Annex, at 31 W. Chewuch Road in Winthrop, has scheduled an open house and holiday bazaar for noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday (Dec. 18).

The event features a free co-work day, yoga with Motive Yoga Co., tea from Madre Tea Bar and more from Sweetgrass Cut Co., Red Umbrella Designs, Emily Post Pottery, Intertwined Designs Clothing, Pine Shadow Jewelry, PA’Nana Soap Co. and Peter Nawrot Woodworking. For more information, contact leasing@mtnannex.com for more information.

Christmas-season services

Methow Episcopal will hold Sunday Advent services at 5 p.m. on Sunday (Dec. 19), and a Christmas Eve service, with youth Nativity play, on Dec. 24 — time to be determined. All services will be held in the Friendship Alliance Church at 809 Highway 20 in Winthrop; masks are required. Online services are available. Go to www.methowepiscopal.com for more information. All are welcome.
