ATF now involved in theft investigation
Two people reportedly stole 10 handguns in what is suspected to be a well-coordinated burglary at Winthrop’s Ace Hardware last month.
“This was a directed or targeted burglary. … This appears to be much different from our typical Methow burglary,” said Winthrop Marshal Doug Johnson, who said he couldn’t share too many details, as the investigation is still underway.
However, he told The Methow Valley News this week that the investigation now also involves the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, or ATF.
The incident was first reported as a burglary alarm at 5:23 a.m. on Nov. 21.
Two suspects entered through the front doors by breaking the class, went straight to the sporting goods section, broke that case open and stole the handguns. They were in the building for less than four minutes, Johnson said.
While he couldn’t share specific information about suspects, Johnson said his office would announce when an arrest is made.
“We anticipate a positive conclusion to this investigation,” he said.
