River access in Winthrop
The Town of Winthrop got a bit of a surprise when a grant request made three years ago to the state Recreation and Conservation Office (RCO) was recently approved, providing funding for a project to provide access to the Methow River at Mack Lloyd Park.
The $294,000 project will include restrooms, parking, an access ramp to the river — mainly for tubers and rafters — riverbank restoration and parking lot improvements. Town Planner Rocklynn Culp said the RCO grant of $176,000 covers 60% of the project cost. The rest will be locally matched, which may include in-kind work or donations, Lodging Tax Advisory Committee funds and/or contributions by local organizations, Culp said.
The project funds must be used by late 2024. Culp said the first step in the process will be to apply for permitting by state and federal agencies with jurisdiction over the river.
