Two new exhibits are coming to Confluence Gallery in Twisp on Saturday (May 8).

“American Craft: We the People” will be displayed in the main gallery, while the community gallery will showcase “Framing Tactile,” a solo exhibit by Linda Pawson. Both showcases will run until June 19.

“American Craft” focuses on the handmade crafts many artists have turned to during the coronavirus lockdown.

“It was pretty much based on what was happening with COVID, because we all went back home, inside,” Theresa Miller, one of the curators of the show, said. “It’s uncovering what people were going through.”

Artists were asked to submit paintings, weavings, jewelry, sculptures, woodworking and glassworks. One artist created lockdown dioramas, another submitted a sculpture in homage to Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and multiple versions of the American flag were also submitted.

The show will present uncommon juxtaposition, a signature of this country.

“It’s a real mix,” Miller said. “Usually our exhibits are dominant in wall art, but three-quarters of this show is on the floor. People will be walking amongst the work.”

Linda Pawson, a Washington state native, will showcase found objects in textile frames in her exhibit. She often works with handmade paper from around the world and frames from different time periods, creating an integration of past and present.

Additionally, Confluence Gallery is hosting a “personal portrait gallery” fundraiser on May 19 from 2 to 4 p.m. and May 23 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Photographer Roxanne Best is donating her time for 20-minute portrait sessions that can include up to five people.

“As an artist and someone who works with artists, many of them don’t have professional headshots,” Best explained. “So the other side of this event, besides fundraising, was offering an affordable option for artists who might not have the means to do a full branding shoot.”

The cost for each shoot is $120, with 100% of the proceeds going directly back to Confluence Gallery.
