News Briefs: Storytime, ‘Earthrise,’ first-half taxes

Kids’ storytime

NCW Libraries hosts storytime for preschool-aged kids on Zoom each Thursday morning at 9:30 a.m., for half an hour. The sessions include book readings, songs and other fun activities. Storytime sessions are 1/2 hour long. Visit www.ncwlibraries.org/kids for the Zoom leak.

‘Earthrise’ movie screened

Resilient Methow & Community Learning Lab, and Huxley College of the Environment, are hosting a free online presentation of the movie “Earthrise” at 7 p.m. on Thursday (April 22). The Emmy-nominated film by Emmanuel Vaughan-Lee tells the story of the experience astronauts had in witnessing an Earthrise from the moon, and their taking of a photograph that helped inspire the first Earth Day. The presentation will be followed by a discussion. Visit http://ResilientMethow.org to register.

First-half taxes due

Leah Mc Cormack, Okanogan County Treasurer, reminds all taxpayers that 2021 first-half property taxes and irrigation assessments are due and must be postmarked by Friday, April 30, Interest will start accruing on May 1, at 1% per month.

If you are mailing your taxes or assessments, send payment to: Okanogan County Treasurer, PO Box 111, Okanogan, WA 98840. If paying by credit card, go to www.okanogancounty.org/Treasurer. There will be a small convenience fee applied to credit card payments. For customer service, call 1 – 888 – 891‑6064 and choose option 1.

The Treasurer’s office will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 26 thru April 30.

‘Speaking of Dying’ screened

Methow At Home offers a free online presentation of Trudy James’ film, “Speaking of Dying,” and a post-film conversation with local clinical nurse Jocelyn Murray, at 4 p.m. on April 27. Register at methowathome.org.

Celebration of life for Mary Kiesau

A celebration of life for Mary Kiesau will be held at 2 p.m. on May 1, at the TwispWorks outdoor pavilion. Mary Kiesau Community Fellowship Award recipients will also be announced at the event.

TwispWorks and the Methow Conservancy teamed up to create the Mary Kiesau Community Fellowship Fund. The fund will support the independent projects of artists, photographers and naturalists working to further their own creativity, professional development, and the community’s connection to the land, art and each other.

To support the fund, donate online at the Community Foundation of North Central Washington, http://cfncw.org, or send a check, payable to the Mary Kiesau Community Fellowship Fund, to CFNCW, 9 S. Wenatchee Ave., Wenatchee, WA 98801.

Classroom in Bloom plant sale

Classroom in Bloom will again be conducting its spring plant sale this year from  9 a.m. – 4 p.m. on May 15. Preview vegetable and flower starts for purchase online, and some seeds and Classroom in Bloom gear. All funds raised will go towards school garden education programs. Masks and social distancing will be enforced. www.classroominbloom.org/new-events for information about the sale.

Kiwanis auction is coming

Winthrop Kiwanis, which again had to forego its annual fundraising event the Bite of the Methow as it did in 2020, will instead hold an online auction beginning June 4 and continuing through June 13.

Auction items will be available for pick-up at Mack Lloyd Park in Winthrop on Saturday, June 19, between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., just in time for Father’s Day on June 20. If COVID restrictions allow, Kiwanis will also offer pulled pork sandwiches in the park.
