Seguin arson case dismissed by county court

March 24, 2021 by Methow Valley News

A case against Mark Seguin, who was charged with arson in the 2019 fire that destroyed his house on Burgar Street in Twisp, has been completely dismissed, following the death of Seguin.

Okanogan County Superior Court Judge Henry Rawson signed the complete dismissal of the case on March 1. Seguin died of natural causes on Feb. 2 at age 63, according to court documents.

Seguin had been charged with one count of first-degree arson, one count of insurance fraud and 22 counts of reckless endangerment, according to court documents. He pleaded not guilty at a hearing in July 2019.

Liberty Mutual, which insured the house, said they don’t publicly comment on the details of their customers’ claims.

A fire investigator with Safeco Insurance (part of the Liberty Mutual company) inspected the house two days after the fire and agreed with local officials that the fire was suspicious, according to the police report. Safeco denied the claim at that time.

A separate 2019 investigation by an Okanogan County sheriff’s detective determined the fire had been caused by arson.
