Mikie Skelton lost her battle with cancer on Friday, March 6, 2020, at the young age of 71. She passed away at Central Washington Hospital with her two boys by her side. Mikie was born, Michelle A. Stanphil, on March 18, 1948, to June and Paul Stanphil in Spokane, however she lived and grew up in Peshastin, Washington. As a young girl, she loved her horses and snow skiing. She was most proud of the opportunity she was afforded to travel to Europe when she was 18 years of age through a 4-H exchange. She graduated from Peshastin-Dryden High School and attended Wenatchee Valley Community College.
In 1968, she married the love of her life, Roy Skelton from Leavenworth, Washington, and they had two sons, Shane and Randy. They moved to Prospect, Oregon, in 1970 to pursue Roy’s career with the U.S. Forest Service and lived in various small communities until landing in Twisp in 1978, where they both retired in 1995. Mikie always stayed busy with various jobs in the small communities they lived, most notably, as a school bus driver in the Methow Valley which afforded her the opportunity to drive her boys to their many sports activities. Mikie was a hard-working woman who loved to be outdoors whether it was fishing, hunting, horse packing in the wilderness or working in her garden. Once she and Roy retired, they soon became snow birds and traveled to Arizona in the winter months.
