A crew of 11 Methow Valley Nordic Team (MVNT) racers headed to Kamloops, BC, for the recent BC Midget Championships.
The skiers raced three times in two days, mainly competing against skiers in their birth year. On Saturday morning, all the skiers raced a 2-kilometer individual start classic race with these results: 2007 girls, Marta Schkrohowsky 4th; 2008 boys, Ben Kaufman 1st, Aidan Sands 9th; 2008 girls, Marit Nelson 1st, Josie Bolinger 10th, Ingrid Venable 22nd; 2009 boys, Sam Polson 23rd; 2009 girls, Wylie Smith 10th; 2010 girls, Sisu Clark 1st, Clara Ramsay-George 11th, Maren Sands 17th.
Skiers joined up on relay teams of four for the afternoon events, competing against all the age groups combined. In the boys’ relay, Ben Kaufman, Aidan Sands and Sam Polson combined with a racer from Plain for a 7th-place relay finish. In the girls’ race, Marit Nelson, Marta Schkrohowsky, Clara Ramsay-George and Maren Sands combined for an 8th-place finish. Sisu Clark, Josie Bolinger, Ingrid Venable and Wylie Smith combined for a 15th-place finish.
Sunday morning’s event was a King’s Court skate sprint, with these results: 2007 girls, Marta Schkrohowsky 4th; 2008 boys, Ben Kaufman 2nd, Aidan Sands 8th; 2008 girls, Marit Nelson 1st, Josie Bolinger 12th, Ingrid Venable 24th; 2009 boys, Sam Polson 19th; 2009 girls, Wylie Smith 9th; 2010 girls, Sisu Clark 4th, Maren Sands 11th, Clara Ramsay George 12th.
More racing
MVNT had competitors at several venues last weekend. Seven skiers traveled to McCall, Idaho, for the Intermountain Youth Ski Championships at the Little Ski Hill. With about 100 skiers mainly in the 7-13 age range, it was a busy and fun weekend, Hall reported.
Saturday morning was an individual start skate race with the following results: Dashe McCabe 6th, U14 girls; Marta Schkrohowsky 10th, U14 girls; Ben Kaufman 1st, U12 boys; Aidan Sands 5th, U12 boys; Emil Schkrohowsky 12th, U12 boys; Marit Nelson 1st, U12 girls; Harriett Schkrohowsky 2nd, U10 girls.
The skiers then competed in a cross/obstacle course race in the afternoon. Results were: Dashe McCabe 2nd and Marta Schkrohowsky 3rd in the U14 girls’ class; Ben Kaufman 1st, Aidan Sands 8th and Emil Schkrohowsky 10th in the U12 boys’ class; Marit Nelson 2nd in the U12 girls’ class; Harriett Schkrohowsky 2nd in the U10 girls’ class.
Sunday morning all the skiers competed in mass start classic races on firm tracks. Results: Dashe McCabe 1st in U14 girls’ followed by Marta Schkrohowsky in 10th; Marit Nelson 1st in U12 girls; Ben Kaufman 1st in the U12 boys, with Aidan Sands 5th and Emil Schkrohowsky 8th; Harriett Schkrohowsky 1st, U10 girls.
Meanwhile, several MVNT skiers headed to Snoqualmie Pass for the Washington Cup finals. Madison Williams and Maren Sands ended up 2nd and 3rd in the U10 classic sprint; Jude Polson and Dylan Sands finished in the top six in the U8 boys’ category; Sam Polson was in the second heat (top 12) in the U12 boys’ final; and Graham and Carter Sheley finished in the top six in the U16/18 boys’ category. Madison Williams won the overall Washington Cup series for the U10 girls.
Twelve team members head to Truckee, California, on Friday (March 6) for the Junior National Championships.
Novie update
The Methow Valley’s Novie McCabe raced at the World Junior Championships in Oberwiesenthal, Germany, in the freestyle sprint. She qualified in 19th place but was boxed in coming in to the line in the quarterfinal and ended up 5th so did not advance, placing 22nd overall. She will race again on Wednesday (March 4) in the 15K freestyle mass start.
