The Liberty Bell High School Knowledge Bowl team, state 2B champions in 2019, will defend their title at the state meet on March 21 at West Valley High School in Yakima.
Liberty Bell is coming off an impressive first-place finish at the North Central Washington regionals on Feb. 24 at Wenatchee.
Competing against Brewster, Manson, Soap Lake, Tonasket and Waterville, Liberty Bell scored 75 points in four oral rounds and one written round, easily outdistancing second-place Tonasket with 52 points. Soap Lake scored 49 for third place and will join Tonasket and Liberty Bell at the state tournament.
Liberty Bell scored the most points in three of the four oral rounds, and was the top scorer in the written round as well at the regional competition.
Coach Leverett Hubbard is taking nearly an all-new team to the state championships this year, which could have been regarded as a rebuilding season. The Liberty Bell team –which includes one junior and no seniors –is junior Lindsay Worrell, sophomores Per Dillingham, Alex Eslava and Sophia Newton, and freshmen Rocco Wildman and Madison Strauss. Dillingham is the only returning member from last year’s state championship team.
Liberty Bell has finished either first or second in the previous four Knowledge Bowl state meets, and has finished in the top 10 seven out of the past eight years.
