The Okanogan Valley Orchestra and Chorus are taking music to new heights in their family concert, “Soaring!,” a selection of classical, popular and movie music about flying.
The orchestra performs medleys from favorite movies, including a symphonic suite from the Harry Potter movies; music from the Academy Award–winning animated film “UP”; and music from “Apollo 13.” They’re also playing the intensely frenetic “Ride of the Valkyries” from the Richard Wagner opera “Die Walküre” in a performance on Feb. 22.
The chorus performs “Fly Me To The Moon,” the Hawaiian “E Nana Kakou I Na Manu” (Look at the Birds in the Sky”) and the uplifting “Flying for the Joy of the Flight.” They’re also singing Mendelssohn’s “The Nightingale” and the beloved classics “Over the Rainbow” and “Swinging on a Star.”
A cherished ritual in the family concert is when kids are invited onto the stage during part of the orchestra performance to experience music up close.
“Soaring!” is at 3 p.m. at the Omak Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, and free for children.
