Liberty Bell’s Hannah Bakke launched a drive to the basket in the Lady Lions’ win over Manson. Bakke had 22 rebounds in two games last week.
The Liberty Bell High School girls’ basketball team heads into the last week of regular-season play on a six-game winning streak, hoping for two more victories to keep their hold on second place in league play.
The higher the finish in league action, the better position the Lady Lions will be in for high seeding in post-season play. Last week Liberty Bell overwhelmed Manson, 67-11, followed by an 80-29 win over Bridgeport. The Lady Lions’ record is 14-2 in league play and 15-3 overall.
Liberty Bell had its best defensive effort of the season against visiting Manson on Jan. 28. On the offensive side, the Lady Lions were led by sophomore Jadyn Mitchell’s double-double of 23 points and 11 rebounds, plus 3 assists. Senior Ali Palm just missed a double-double with 13 points and 9 rebounds to go with 4 steals. Senior Hannah Bakke accounted for 8 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.
On Friday (Jan. 31), Liberty Bell had its best offensive output of the year, racing to a 42-20 halftime lead. After allowing the Fillies 20 first-half points — compared to the 19 Bridgeport scored in earlier loss to the Lady Lions — Liberty Bell clamped down hard in the second half including a 24-2 third quarter.
Mitchell ruled the stat sheets with yet another double-double — 20 points, 14 rebounds — and added 6 assists and 2 blocked shots. She led a balanced scoring effort that included junior Sammy Curtis with 16 points, junior Madi Surface with 14 points and 9 rebounds, and Palm with 12 points. Tommie Ochoa dealt out 10 assists and picked off 6 steals, and Bakke led rebounders with 12.
The Lady Lions were at Soap Lake on Tuesday (Feb. 3). On Friday (Feb. 7), they finish the regular season by hosting Lake Roosevelt, which is tied for Brewster in third place. Liberty Bell won at Lake Roosevelt earlier in the season, 52-39.
