Three league wins last week kept the Liberty Bell High School girls’ basketball team near the top of the standings, with a chance to improve their position when the Lady Lions host Waterville-Mansfield on Friday (Jan. 17).
With victories over Soap Lake, Lake Roosevelt and Oroville, Liberty Bell moved to a 6-1 record in league play, 9-2 overall. Brewster and Waterville-Mansfield both have 7-1 records in league play. It’s a tight race: Liberty Bell’s only loss was to Brewster, Waterville-Mansfield’s only loss was to Liberty Bell, and Brewster’s only loss was to Waterville-Mansfield. The Lady Lions have won six games in a row since the Brewster loss.
Here’s a roundup of last week’s action.
• Liberty Bell 57, Soap Lake 17. For the fourth consecutive game, the Lady Lions held their opponents to fewer than 20 points, starting with a 14-4 first quarter that put them in command over the visitors. Liberty Bell built its lead though three quarters, and final 8 minutes were played with a running clock because of the Lady Lions’ big lead.
Sophomore Jadyn Mitchell put up 18 points and pulled down 7 rebounds, along with 3 blocked shots, to lead Liberty Bell. Junior Sammy Curtis got two quick fouls in the first quarter, but recovered to score 14 points and grab 6 rebounds. Senior Tommie Ochoa handed out 6 assists and picked off 4 steals. Sophomore Caitlyn Cooley hit the boards for 8 rebounds, and senior Hannah Bakke had 7.
• Liberty Bell 52, Lake Roosevelt 39. The Lady Lions made the long road trip pay off with a comfortable win. Mitchell double-doubled with 16 points and the same number of rebounds. Curtis and senior Ali Palm each added 10 points.
• Liberty Bell 74, Oroville 21. The Lady Lions returned to their home court and again put the clamp on the visitors’ offense. Oroville only eclipsed the 20-point mark in the closing seconds of the game. Several Lady Lions went on scoring spurts at various points in the game, resulting in a stat sheet with four scoring in double figures: Mitchell 17, junior Madi Surface 11, Palm 15 and Curtis 14. Mitchell added 11 rebounds, 6 assists and 6 steals.
Ochoa and Surface each had 4 steals. Cooley almost hit double figures with 8 points and claimed 7 rebounds. Senior Hailey Damman contributed 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Sophomore Shae Taylor had 5 rebounds, and Bakke 4.
Liberty Bell did much of its scoring under the basket and did not have to rely on long-range shooting. “The girls shared the ball really well, finding open the open player and then finishing,” Liberty Bell coach Stephanie Mitchell said.
The Lady Lions tip off against Waterville-Mansfield at 6 p.m. Friday. The next day, they travel to Manson.
