Two Liberty Bell Junior-Senior High School teachers and the Methow Valley School District nurse received grants last month to enhance student health and learning.
The North Central Education Foundation awarded English and drama teacher Kelly Grayum a Teacher Classroom grant to enable eighth-graders to self-publish their own book as part of a creative writing exercise. The money helps students purchase a copy of their own book to keep, Grayum said.
A second Teacher Classroom grant went to junior high math teacher Keri Miles. She used her funds to purchase polystrips, which are lengths of plastic that can be combined to form angles and polygons. Students can gain a deeper understanding of math concepts by physically handling these shapes, Miles said.
A third grant, to school nurse Adriana Vanbianchi, pays for a subscription to the medical website UpToDate, giving her access to the latest information about how to care for any health condition.
Each of the awards was around $300, Superintendent Tom Venable said.
