The Methow Valley Killer Whales swim team completed an undefeated season by winning the county league championship at Wagner Memorial Pool on Saturday (July 27).
The Methow Valley team piled up points with its depth — the first six finishers in each event scored points — to ring up 917.5 points, a comfortable margin over the second-place Okanogan Bullfrogs with 645 points. The Omak Manta Rays finished third with 418 points, and the Brewster Bearacudas finished fourth with 346.5 points.
It was the third consecutive league title for the Methow Valley team, whose nine-year winning streak was interrupted by the Bearacudas in 2016 because the Wagner Pool’s closure for repairs delayed training for the local swimmers.
With 116 individual and relay events, the meet consumed most of Saturday. The Killer Whales had 41 first-place finishes, 28 second-place finishes, and took third place 34 times. They also scored heavily in places four through six in many events.
Three Killer Whales swimmers were the top point-scorers in their age groups: Nils Smith (boys 6 and under), Zahra Borowski (girls 6 and under), and Zoie Dubowy (girls 7-8). Each of them won three events.
Other top performers for the Methow Valley team were Shad Frantz (boys 13-14) with five wins, and Nyah Frantz (girls 9-10) with six wins.
The Killer Whales tuned up for the championship meet with a dual-meet victory over Omak on July 23. Methow Valley outdistanced the Manta Rays, 349-256. Killer Whales took 37 first-place finishes, 34 second places and 24 third places.
