The first leg of the Ski to Sea Relay race, Nordic skiing, took off from the Mt. Baker Ski Area. In the middle of the photo, No. 038, is Eva Weymuller of the Baker Babes team, which won the high school division.

Local participants made an impact at the recent Ski to Sea Relay Race, which involves teams of Nordic skiers, alpine skiers/snowboarders, road and cyclocross bicyclists, canoeists, kayakers and runners taking relay legs on a course from the Mt. Baker Ski Area to Bellingham Bay.

The race is held annually on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend.

A Ski to Sea team consists of three to eight racers. The race course runs through the towns of Glacier, Maple Falls, Kendall, Everson, Lynden and Ferndale, finishing at Marine Park in the historic Fairhaven district of Bellingham.

Liberty Bell High School student Eva Weymuller participated on the winning high school team. Because the Methow Valley teams were already full, Weymuller joined the Baker Babes and raced the cross country ski leg. She was the first high school girl to finish the leg and was among the top five women finishers: Caitlin Gregg, Kikkan Randall, Dashe McCabe, Claire Waichler and Weymuller. McCabe’s team, the Stones Throw Brewery Hustlers, took second place in the competitive mixed division.

Second place in the high school division, behind the Baker Babes, was claimed by the Kid Goats, which included Liberty Bell High School athletes Walker Hall, Emerson Worrell, Lazo Gitchos, Henry Jones, Simon Studen, Travis Grialou and Nicholas Fitzmaurice. Finishing eighth in the high school division was another Methow Valley team, Jazzin’ and Spazzin’, that included Lilia Kuzyk, Mariah Lucy, Annika Libby, Lena Nelson, Liv Aspholm, Maisy Shaw, Jori Grialou and Wyatt Albright.

The College Kid Goats team included Claire Waichler, Anthony Krichevskly, Eli Nielsen, Cade Quigley, Bram Wathen, Daniel Rodriguez, Colin Waichler and Ariana Woods. They took 13th place in the competitive open division.

The Sixknot Supergirls, including Ella Kuzyk, Ali Palm, Icel Sukovaty, Gretta Scholz, Sally Thornton-White, Ava Mott, Greta Laesch and Maya Sheeley, took third place in the competitive women’s division.

Walker Hall was second overall in the Nordic skiing leg. Brian Gregg took first place in that division. Chad Gregg finished in ninth place overall.

Scott Waichler raced the Nordic leg for the Mt. Baker Ravens, who took first place in the veterans division. Louis Sukovaty led off the Nordic leg for the Peoples Bank team that took second in the veterans division.

Dozens of Nordic and alpine skiers led off the first two legs of the race for their teams.
