The Methow Valley Mountain Bike Team finished its season last weekend at the Washington State Student League state championship races at Squilchuck State Park in Wenatchee, with several of the team’s 10 competitors claiming podium finishes.
The championship course was the toughest of the four-meet series, with 5.3 miles of technical riding and more than 800 feet of climbing — and temperatures were in the 90s. The highlights:
• Eva Weymuller won first place in the intermediate girls’ category and finished the season second in overall scoring.
• Gretta Scholz took third place in the intermediate girls’ category despite crashing twice.
• Stella Scholz took third place in the eighth-grade girls’ competition.
• Ila Newman was third in the seventh-grade girls’ division.
• Jakob Buchanan raced his best race of the season, placing 56th among 77 racers in the intermediate boys’ division.
• Alex Tareski improved 22 places and Cooper Legler improved six places from the previous race to place 15th and 19th respectively in the beginner boys’ field. Both boys were new to mountain biking at the beginning of the season.
• Graham Sheley took sixth place, finishing with a pack of racers and missing third place by 7 seconds, and Carter Sheley took 13th place in the eighth-grade division.
• Landry Chrastina, riding in the largest field, placed 15th out of 90 seventh-grade boys’ riders.
