The Methow Valley Elementary fifth-grade Math is Cool team traveled to Moses Lake for the State Masters competition on May 18. The Mad Adders, represented by Gavin Blank, Alex Ramsay-George, Greta Schumacher and Bodie Thomson, placed fifth overall in their division of 16 teams.
The team did particularly well in the fast-paced College Bowl competition to pull ahead of several other teams and earn the fifth-place plaque. In the individual competition, Ramsay-George placed sixth, Thomson 18th, Schumacher 22nd and Blank 33rd in the division of 64 competitors.
The fifth grade Math is Cool team was coached by Eric Blank and Jennifer Ramsay. Since 1999, the statewide Masters competition has been held each spring for teams from top-qualifying schools. The Mad Adders qualified for the Masters competition by placing first in their division at the regional competition in March. This year, the Masters hosted more than 500 fourth- and fifth-grade students from over 100 schools in Washington, Oregon and Idaho.
