Teams qualify 15 for state meet in Cheney

The Liberty Bell High School girls ran away with their third consecutive team title at the District 5/6 track meet in Quincy last weekend, and qualified 10 competitors for the state 2B meet at Eastern Washington University in Cheney starting on Friday (May 24).

Meanwhile, the Liberty Bell boys qualified five for the state meet, finishing ninth out of 16 teams represented at the district meet.

The girls’ results included four first-place finishes, highlighted by a 1-2-3 sweep in the 1,600-meter run won by sophomore Keeley Brooks, who edged senior Icel Sukovaty by 8/100ths of a second as freshman Maisy Shaw claimed third place. Sukovaty returned for a victory in the 3,200M with sophomore Lena Nelson in a qualifying fourth-place finish.

The relay team of sophomore Sammy Curtis, junior Ali Palm, senior Sally Thornton-White and freshman Chloe Sprauer took first place in both the 4x100M and 4x200M relays. The 4x200M time was second-fastest in school history, 11/100ths of a second behind the all-time best set in 2007. The 4x400M relay team of Brooks, Shaw, Thornton-White and senior Ava Mott qualified for state with a third-place finish.

Curtis took a break from the running events to win the long jump with a big personal record of 15 feet, 7 ½ inches — 7 inches beyond her previous best, and good for fourth-place in the Liberty Bell all-time record books. Mott also had a PR in the long jump, spanning 14 feet, 10 ¼ inches for fourth place and a trip to state in that event, along with  10th-best in the Liberty Bell annals. Palm took third place in the triple jump and will compete in that event at Cheney.

Thornton-White captured third place in the 400M and a trip to state in that event. The Lady Lions also scored big points in the 800M run, where Brooks took second, Mott third and Shaw fourth place.

Curtis just missed qualifying in the 100M dash in fifth place, and freshman Caitlyn Cooley finished a non-qualifying fifth in the shot put.

Accompanying the team as an alternate in the relays will be freshman Megan Voigt. Curtis, Thornton-White, Palm, Sukovaty and Brooks competed at state last year.

Liberty Bell took the team title with 124.5 points, with DeSales in second with 99 points.

For the boys, senior Brayden White notched another win in the 300M hurdles, earning a trip to state. Also qualifying were senior Emerson Worrell, second in the 800M, and junior Magnus Treise with a third-place finish in the high jump.

The 4x400M relay team of Brayden White, senior Tanner White, Treise and Worrell took third place and will compete at Cheney. Sophomore Bodie Paul will go along as a relay team alternate. Brayden White, Worrell, Paul and Treise competed at state last year.

Manson took the team title, edging Oroville by less than a point.

Liberty Bell coach Rocky Kulsrud said “the competition level looks to be very formidable, but hopefully we will peak at state.” Last year, the Liberty Bell girls scored 17 points at state, and tied for 15th place. The boys scored three points, finishing 35th.
