Lady Lions surge with winning streak

May 1, 2019 by Don Nelson

The Liberty Bell High School softball team reeled off a four-game winning streak in action last week, moving the Lady Lions up in the CWB league standings.

The streak started with a 17 – 0 home field win over Soap Lake on April 23. Tommie Ochoa pitched the shutout for Liberty Bell, giving up only one hit and striking out four. Madi Surface had an epic day at the plate with four hits including a home run and a double. Peyton Lawrence, Adee Smith and Sabyl Curtis each had two hits.

On April 25, the Lady Lions traveled to Manson and swept a double-header, 22 – 3 in the first game and 8 – 4 in the second. Ochoa again pitched for Liberty Bell in the first game, and Surface continued her torrid hitting, going five for six with another home run and scoring four runs. The rest of the lineup pounded the ball as well. Lawrence had three hits, Curtis homered among her four hits and scored four runs, Hannah Bakke added three hits, Hailey Damman rapped out three hits including a double, Bella Chrastina had three hits, and Smith scored four runs.

Lawrence took the mound for Liberty Bell in the second game, and also had three hits including a triple. Curtis and Damman each had two hits, and for the third consecutive game the Lady Lions had a home run, this time by Ochoa.

The week concluded with another double-header at Oroville. Liberty Bell made it four in a row with a 7 – 4 in the first game, but lost the second game, 9 – 8, as Oroville made a dramatic extra-inning comeback.

Ochoa pitched game one. Surface picked up two more hits including a double, and Chrastina added two hits.

The second game went extra innings as the teams remained knotted at 5 – 5 after seven. Neither team scored in the eighth. Liberty Bell put three runs across in the top of the ninth, but Oroville countered with four in the bottom of the ninth for the win.

Lawrence pitched the first three innings for the Lady Lions, and Ochoa finished the game on the mound. Lawrence had two hits including a single, Curtis added two hits, Ochoa went three-for-five, Damman also went three-for-five including a double, and Chrastina registered another two hits.

Liberty Bell traveled to Soap Lake on Tuesday (April 30), then finishes the regular season with a home field double-header against Bridgeport on Friday (May 3), with the first game starting at 3:30 p.m. Last week’s games left the Lady Lions with a 4 – 8 record in league play, 7 – 9 overall.
