Mixed results for Liberty Bell tennis teams last week

Liberty Bell’s Nicholas Fitzmaurice readied for a return against Okanogan.

The Liberty Bell High School tennis teams took on three opponents last week as gradually improving weather allowed the Mountain Lions netters – veterans and newcomers alike –to get some valuable experience.

At Pateros on April 9, the Liberty Bell girls prevailed, 4-1, while the boys fell by 3-2. Liberty Bell hosted Entiat on April 11 and came away with two wins, the girls by 4-1 and the boys by 5-0. Finally, the teams traveled to 1A Okanogan and both lost, the girls by 3-2 and boys by 4-1.

Pateros

Girls’ singles: Ruthann Matteson won 6-0, 6-2; Shelby Vintin won, 8-4; Chloe Temple won 8-1. Doubles: Ellie Blank and Larkin Lucy lost 5-7, 6-3, 6-8 in a tiebreaker; Lydia Whitlock and Amber Surface won by forfeit.

Boys’ singles: Tyler White lost 3-6, 4-6; Nicholas Fitzmaurice lost 7-9; Konnor Doran won 8-5. Doubles: Isaac Blodgett and Zane Grubb lost 3-6, 2-6; Ezekiel Kirk and Evan Dornfeld won by forfeit.

Entiat

Girls’ singles: Matteson won 6-0, 6-0; Vintin won 8-0; Temple won 8-0. Doubles: Blank and Lucy won 6-4, 6-2; Whitlock and Surface lost 6-8.

Boys’ singles: White won 6-2, 6-0; Fitzmaurice won 8-4; Doran won 8-4; Blodgett and Grubb won 6-2, 6-4; Kirk and Dornfeld won 8-4.

Okanogan

Girls’ singles: Matteson won 6-1, 6-0; Vintin won 6-3, 2-6, 10-5 tiebreaker; Temple lost 0-6, 1-6. Doubles: Blank and Lucy lost 0-6, 0-6; Whitlock and Kristy Vieth lost 0-6, 0-6.

Boys’ singles: Fitzmaurice lost 0-6, 6-2, 5-10; Alex Garcia lost 0-6, 1-6; Doran lost 0-6, 1-6. Doubles: Blodgett and Grubb won 6-1, 6-1; Kirk and Dornfeld lost 3-6, 3-6.

Liberty Bell traveled to Oroville on Tuesday (April 16), will be at Entiat on Thursday (April 18) and travel to Lake Roosevelt next Tuesday (April 23).

The boys’ team is 2-2 in league play and 2-4 overall; the girls’ team is 3-1 in league play and 3-3 overall.
