Mountain Lions sweep Lake Roosevelt with dominant pitching

April 3, 2019 by Don Nelson

After starting the season with two one-run losses, The Liberty Bell High School baseball team evened its record at 2-2 with a double-header sweep at Lake Roosevelt last Friday (March 29) — including a no-hitter.

“Our pitching really came through in both games,” Liberty Bell coach David Aspholm said. “Freshman David Kominak started the first game and stymied the rhythm of the Lake Roosevelt batters for most of the night. He pitched six innings, giving up two runs and five hits.” Kominak added eight strikeouts.

Senior Peter Aspholm started the second game and threw 6 2/3rd innings, dominating the Lake Roosevelt hitters. Aspholm struck out 19, walked one and allowed no hits. Junior Shay Crandall finished the final two innings on the mound and allowed no hits, and the two Liberty Bell pitchers combined for a no-hitter.

“Our bats were consistent throughout the afternoon and evening,” coach Aspholm said. “One of the joys of coaching is watching younger players come through in the clutch. Freshmen Eli Neitlich filled in at second base after senior Cole Rhoades was injured in the first game, and Eli helped turn a couple of double plays, had no errors and while he did not register any hits he squared the ball up exceptionally well at the plate.  Those will be hits in the future.”

In the first game, Peter Aspholm and Leo Shaw each had two hits, with Aspholm driving in a couple of runs.

In the second game, Neitlich and Dusty Patterson each had two hits, and Crandall had two RBIs.

Liberty Bell hosts Okanogan in a non-league double-header on Friday (April 5), starting at 3 p.m.
