Home court advantage worked for the Liberty Bell High School girls’ and boys’ tennis teams against Lake Roosevelt last week, but a tough Tonasket Tigers team was another matter.
On March 26, the girls defeated visiting Lake Roosevelt, 3-2, while the boys also won, 3-2.
For the girls, No. 1 singles player Ruthann Matteson — who represented Liberty Bell at the state tournament last year — won 6-3, 6-0. Shelby Vintin also won, 8-5, but Chloe Temple lost a hard-fought match that was tied at 8-8. She lost 7-9 in the tiebreaker.
Larkin Lucy and Ellie Blank lost a doubles match, 2-6, 4-6. Lydia Whitlock and Amber Surface won their doubles match by forfeit.
Tyler White, playing in the boys’ No. 1 singles position, won his match 6-2, 3-6, 7-5. Nick Fitzmaurice lost, 3-8; and Konnor Doran also lost by the same score. Isaac Blodgett and Zane Grubb won their doubles match, 6-2, 6-1; Evan Budrow and Ezekiel Kirk also won, 8-2.
Tonasket visited Liberty Bell on March 28 and came away with two wins: the Liberty Bell girls lost, 1-4, while the boys were shut out, 0-5.
Matteson won the only match for the Lady Lions, 6-0, 6-1 in singles play. Vintin lost, 5-8, as did Lucy — although the match went to a sudden-death tiebreaker. In doubles, Temple and Blank lost 0-6, 2-6, while Whitlock and Surface fell, 0-8.
White lost the boys’ No. 1 singles match, 1-6, 1-6; Fitzmaurice lost 3-8; and Doran was shut out, 0-8. Blodgett and Grubb fell in doubles, 3-6, 1-6; while Budrow and Kirk were defeated by 3-8.
The teams next play at Pateros on April 9.
