MV Nordic Team heads to Alaska for Junior Nationals

The Methow Valley Nordic team had an active season that concluded with 14 team members traveling to Alaska for the Junior Nationals this week.

The Methow Valley Nordic team (MVNT) sent its biggest contingent ever — 14 skiers representing MVNT and the Pacific Northwest Ski Association (PNSA) — to the Junior Nationals competition that began Monday (March 11) in Anchorage, Alaska.

Making the trip were Hadassah Lurbur, Ella-Sophie Kuzyk, Greta Laesch, Gretta Scholz, Garrett Butts, Travis Grialou, Walker Hall, Keeley Brooks, Jori Grialou, Lilia Kuzyk, Mahali Kuzyk, Mariah-May Lucy, Eva Weymuller and Bodhi Kuzyk.

Racing got underway Monday with freestyle skiing events. Walker Hall had the best finish of the day for the MVNT, taking ninth place in the U20/U18 men’s competition. All results for Monday’s freestyle events:

• 5K U20/U18 girls (101 racers) — Hadassah Lurbur, 27th; Gretta Scholz, 35th; Ella-Sophie Kuzyk, 53rd; Greta Laesch, 60th.

• 5K U16 boys (72 racers) — Bodhi Kuzyk, 12th.

• 10K U20/U18 men (135 racers) — Walker Hall, 9th; Garrett Butts, 23rd; Travis Grialou, 61st.

• 5K U16 girls (72 racers) — Jori Grialou, 19th; Eva Weymuller, 47th; Lilia Kuzyk, 51st; Mariah-May Lucy, 52nd; Keeley Brooks, 64th; Mahali Kuzyk, 65th.

Sprint races were scheduled for Tuesday (March 12). See next week’s newspaper for complete results.
