LBHS finishes 16th in team competition
By Don Nelson
All four of Liberty Bell High School’s representatives placed at last weekend’s Mat Classic state championships in Tacoma, and the Mountain Lions matched their 2018 performance by claiming 16th place among 45 teams in class 1B/2B competition.
Liberty Bell freshman Cody White, wrestling at 106 pounds, took fourth place. Junior Jed McMillan took sixth place at 120 pounds, and freshman Noah Holston was also sixth at 145 pounds. Sophomore Bodie Paul took fifth at 160 pounds.
First place in the 1B/2B competition went to Tonasket with 348 points, followed by Lake Roosevelt with 219 points. The Mountain Lions scored 56.5 points at the tournament, which had 32 entries in each bracket (rather than the usual 16) because the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association had canceled all boys’ and girls’ regional wrestling tournaments due to threatening weather conditions, including the 1B/2B regional tournament that was scheduled for Saturday (Feb. 9) in Oroville. As a result, the four Liberty Bell High School boys who qualified to compete in the regionals moved on to compete in the 1B/2B division at the Mat Classic.
After losing his first match in the championship round — a fall to Cory Perryman of Reardan — White battled back with four straight wins, all by falls, in consolation matches to again face Perryman for third and fourth places. Perryman once again prevailed in a fall at 4:40.
McMillan took a similar route after losing his first championship round match, notching four consecutive wins — three of them by falls — in the consolation round before losing in the semi-finals. In the fifth/sixth-place match, he lost by a fall to Israel Gomez of Tonasket at 4:51.
Holston also recovered from a first championship round loss to roll through the consolation rounds with four straight wins including three falls. After losing in the consolation semi-finals, in the fifth/sixth-place match he lost by decision to Carsen Walton of Tonasket.
Paul got off to a fast start with two wins in the championship round, including a 5 – 0 decision over Ethan Buck of Toledo. Paul advanced to the quarter-finals, where he lost to Joe Peasley of Wilbur-Creston in a fall. In the consolation rounds, Paul advanced to the semi-finals, where he lost by decision to Austin Wood of Tonasket, 6 – 0. In the fifth/sixth-place match, Paul faced Buck of Toledo again, and won another decision by the same 5 – 0 score.
Liberty Bell scored 29 points to finish 16th out of 44 teams at the 2018 meet. At the 2017 Mat Classic, Liberty Bell finished 23rd.
