The inaugural Ski to the Sun Marathon and Relay, a 40.6-kilometer Nordic skiing race from Mazama to Sun Mountain Lodge, drew a big field of competitors last Saturday (Jan. 27). More than 50 relay teams completed the course, and more than 150 individual skiers crossed the finish line, according to official results posted by the race sponsor, Methow Trails.
First place in the individual race went to Kent Murdoch of Fall City, Washington, in a time of 2 hours, 9 minutes, 30.7 seconds. The first local finisher was Laura McCabe of Winthrop in fifth place overall. She was also second in the women’s category behind Elizabeth Stephen of Park City, Utah, who took third place overall.
Chad Gregg of Winthrop finished 10th overall and eighth in the men’s category. Marc Tareski of Mazama was 12th overall. Leslie Hall of Winthrop was 16th overall and third in the women’s category. John Spaude of Winthrop also cracked the top 20 in 19th place.
Taking first place in the relay race, with a time of 2 hours, 3 minutes, 38.3 seconds, was the local team Chomper Bompers, made up of Travis Grialou, Bodhi Kuzyk, Garrett Butts and Walker Hall — all members of the Methow Valley Nordic Team. Several other local teams were among the top 10 finishers.
