Wylie Smith of Winthrop took second place among women competitors in the 3-kilometer event at the Sun of a Gun Biathlon in Mazama.

Methow Valley biathletes dominated competition last Sunday (Jan. 27) in the Sun of a Gun Biathlon at Mazama. A total of 31 racers took part in three different events.

“Liberty Bell High School senior Lazo Gitchos had the overall fastest time of the day for the 7.5-kilometer course, making him the ‘top gun’ of the day,” said Betsy Devin-Smith, coach of the Methow Valley Biathlon Team. “All the biathletes did a great job shooting and skiing in the four shooting stage event. For many, it was the first race they have ever participated in.”

In the 7.5K race, Eva Weymuller, 15, of Winthrop was second overall and the first woman finisher. Alex Tareski, 14, of Mazama, took third place overall. Kris Jensen of Mazama was fourth in the men’s masters category. River Ferguson, 9, of Twisp, was first in the men’s novice midget category.

In the 3K race, first place overall went to Dan Kaltenbach of Winthrop. Marc Tareski of Mazama was second, Peter Polson of Winthrop third and Timothy Smith of Winthrop fourth overall. Maeve Belsby, 9, of Winthrop, was the first women’s finisher overall, followed by Wylie Smith, 9, of Winthrop, in second; Katherine Kimer, 43, of Winthrop, in third; Nora Bolinger, 10, of Winthrop, in fourth; Caroline Tareski, 54, of Mazama, fifth; and Sophia Perin, 9, of Twisp, in sixth overall.
