The Liberty Bell High School girls’ soccer team extended its unbeaten streak in the new season with a 4-2 win over Tonasket last Thursday (Sept. 20). The victory gave the Lady Lions a 4-0 record heading into a Tuesday (Sept. 25) match-up against visiting Oroville.
Against Tonasket, the Lady Lions prevailed in a seesaw game to take a come-from-behind win.
“We started strong with lots of pressure and shots on goal,” coach Lincoln Post said. “Josephine Cole scored our first goal. The game then shifted in favor of Tonasket.”
Tonasket “out-hustled us for the next 20 minutes” and scored two goals to take the lead, Post said.
“I really liked the resilience of our team to regroup and gain control of the game,” Post said. “Sally Thornton-White scored to tie the game before the half.”
Liberty Bell controlled play in the second half, as Cole scored another goal and Ali Palm added a point with a free kick from 40 yards out, the coach said.
“Tonasket is a good team and fought hard until the last whistle,” Post said. “We have a couple of ninth-grade players who had a strong game on defense – Chloe Sprauer and Jess Dinham. Ali Palm and Tommie Ochoa have been sharing our goalkeeper responsibility each playing half the game for us. We are off to a great start to our season and continue to grow as a team.”
The Lady Lions have a busy week coming up. They will be at Lake Roosevelt on Thursday (Sept. 27), travel to Okanogan on Monday (Oct. 1), host Pateros on their home pitch on Tuesday (Oct. 2) starting at 4:30 p.m., then are back on the road to Bridgeport on Thursday (Oct. 4).
