The Housing Authority of Okanogan County will open its Housing Choice Voucher Program (formerly known as Section 8 voucher program) from 8 a.m. on Monday (Sept. 10) to 4 p.m. on Oct. 10, 2018. The waiting preference list will be open to victims of domestic violence and involuntary displacement, veterans, families with children, elderly families and disabled families.
Applications for the waiting list are available at the Housing Authority’s website, www.okanoganhousing.org. Click on the application link under each property. They are also available at the Housing Authority’s office, 431 Fifth Ave. W., Omak.
Applications must be complete with all requested documentation and signatures. There is no cost to apply, and a credit check is not needed to apply. Photo ID for the adult head of household and Social Security cards for all members of the household is required.
Successful applicants will be notified by U.S. mail of their placement on the waitlist by Oct. 31.
To qualify for these programs, a family’s annual income may not exceed 50 percent of the median income for Okanogan County ($32,500 per year for a family of four).
The voucher programs offer tenant-based rental assistance to families in the privately owned housing of their choice. The rental subsidy amount is based on a payment standard set by the Housing Authority based on the Fair Market Rents for Okanogan County and set by HUD. An assisted family can expect to pay 30 to 40 percent of their income toward rent and utilities. Information on the programs is available at the Housing Authority Office.
