Questions for Newhouse
Dear Editor:
Rep. Newhouse has been invited to attend a joint Winthrop/Twisp Chamber of Commerce meeting on Friday (Aug. 10), at 8:30 a.m. at Sun Mountain Lodge. I hope he will be prepared to explain why he voted numerous times to overturn the ACA with absolutely no backup plan for the tens of thousands of people in Okanogan County who depend on the ACA for what should be a fundamental right. I would ask him how, if he is indeed a fiscally responsible Republican, he can justify his vote for a tax measure that benefits primarily the top 1 percent and corporations while it explodes the current annual deficit (now projected to be over $1 trillion). I would ask him why we have heard no criticism from him for the Trump administration’s policy of separating families at the border. I would ask him how he can support a reduction in the federal government’s support for affordable housing when so many people are priced out of their communities and can’t afford decent (indeed, any) housing. I would ask him how he can maintain such a double standard when it comes to the behavior of this president, when it is clear that he (and most other Republicans) would have gone totally berserk if President Clinton had tried to shut down the Kenneth Starr investigation. I sincerely hope the chamber will be an honest broker and allow the Democratic candidate to speak at an event sponsored by the chamber.
While Rep. Newhouse has made some effort on our behalf to support the mineral withdrawal that would protect us from mining, he has failed us in every other way. A vote for Newhouse is a vote for Trump.
Congressional District 4 needs a new representative. Christine Brown is my choice.
