Methow Valley kids recently celebrated the 40 years of Awana’s presence in the Methow Valley. Awana started in 1978 at what is now Cascade Bible Church.

Awana, a global, nonprofit ministry for ages 2 to 18 that actively involves parents and church leaders, recently celebrated 40 years in the Methow. The local Awana was started in 1978 at Cascade Bible Church (then called Calvary Baptist Church). Dave Schulz was the first commander of AWANA and was succeeded by Jim McMillan, Paul Nash, Pastor John Smith and currently Andy Floyd.

Kids through high school age are invited to participate in a program where they play games, listen to stories and memorized Bible verses. Anywhere from 50 to 100 kids are involved each year, Floyd said. Many local churches have been or are currently involved and support the non-denominational kids program, including Calvary Chapel, Community Covenant Church, Methodist Church, Church On the Rise, Friendship Church and Mazama Church.

Awana runs for kids through sixth grade from September to March on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-8 p.m. Junior high and high school programs run year-round on Sundays from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at Cascade Bible Church.
