Lady Lions finish season with losses at state tourney

May 31, 2018 by Methow Valley News

Devin Surface named to All-League first team

The Liberty Bell High School softball team’s trip to the state tournament ended on day one at Yakima last weekend, with a 9-4 loss to eventual state 2B champion Northwest Christian School and then an 8-0 loss to Orcas Island in the loser-out bracket.

Nevertheless, it was a successful season for the Lady Lions, who finished tied for second with Lake Roosevelt in league play and scrapped their way into the state tournament.

Last year, Liberty Bell won one game and lost two at the state tournament. As they did this year, in 2017 the Lady Lions played and lost to the eventual 2B champions (Pe Ell/Willapa Valley) in the first round.

Senior Devin Surface was named to the All-League first team for the second consecutive year. Senior Katie Labanauskas was named to the second team, also for the second consecutive year. Janie McMillan and Nadine Treise earned honorable mention; both were also honorable mention last year.

Liberty Bell coach Lee Pilkinton was named Co-coach of the Year. He was also honored as Coach of the Year last year.

Abby Urias of Brewster was named Player of the Year, and her teammate Yvette Sanchez was named Pitcher of the Year. Both are repeats from last year.
